As a young boy in Oregon, Marvin watched as planes landed at Portland International Airport, and dreamed that one day he too would fly. He realized his dream when he became an Army medivac helicopter pilot. As an officer, Marvin was given the additional responsibility of counseling enlisted personnel. As both a medivac pilot and counselor, Marvin found personal satisfaction in helping others in critical situations.
Upon being honorably discharged, Marvin experienced a divorce and custody battle. This experience produced in Marvin the desire to assist other parents going through the trauma and drama of family court. He went back to school and became a Marriage and Family Therapist. Marvin interned as a mediator with Mediation and Conciliation Court Services, Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, where he gained invaluable first hand knowledge of the inner workings of family court.
Marvin was instrumental in establishing and expanding the services of United Fathers of America. Established in 1976, United Fathers was designed to help fathers remain active participants in their children’s lives. Over 30 years later, United Fathers is now a three time award-winning nonprofit organization.
In 1986, Marvin continued to impact family issues by being appointed to the California Senate Task Force on Family Equity, a task force set up by the California legislature to make legislative recommendations relating to family court. Marvin was appointed to this Task Force to represent the concerns of fathers.
During the 90's, Marvin spread the word by lecturing, being on the Board of Modern Dad magazine, and a Board Member of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants.
In 2001, the Orange County District Attorney, Family Support Division, selected Marvin to present “the father’s perspective” for their customer service training.
In 2001 and 2002, Marvin’s work with fathers at United Fathers of America was recognized by receipt of Community Service Awards from Disneyland Resort.
In 2004, United Fathers of America was recognized by receipt of the prestigious Jack B. Lindquist Award, one of ths highest awards given to nonprofit organizations by Disneyland Resort.
In 2004, Marvin took specialized training to become a Collaborative Divorce coach. He views the Collaborative Divorce process as a viable alternative to the current adversarial system. Marvin favors Collaborative Divorce because it supports both the individual and the restructuring family as a whole. He is currently an active member with several Collaborative Divorce groups throughout the Southland.
Having experienced a divorce himself, and through his working with parents (primarily noncustodial parents), Marvin understands the anxiety, confusion, and frustration inherent with a divorce. Through his work at United Fathers of America and the Collaborative Divorce movement, Marvin continues to work towards a more understanding, compassionate, and nonjudgmental divorce process. Marvin considers it an honor and a privilege to support and assist restructuring families.
